One disaster most of us do not plan for and homeowner's policy does not cover is flood. According to A.M. Best Insurance Resource "floods are four times more likely to occur than a fire".

The National Flood Insurance Program flood policy defines a flood as: "a general and temporary condition of partial or complete inundation of two or more acres of normally dry land area or two or more properties (at least one of which is your property) from:
 
  • overflow of inland or tidal waters;
  • the unusual and rapid accumulation or runoff of surface waters from any source;
  • mudflow."
 
Building and contents coverages are sold separately and they have different limits. Both are encouraged to be purchased for the utmost protection. Flood insurance has restrictions and requirements concerning applications and limits and exclusions on coverages.
